The Foster Grandparent Program of Southwestern Pennsylvania is sponsored locally by the American Red Cross of Southwestern Pennsylvania and is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The Foster Grandparent Program of Southwestern Pennsylvania celebrated its inaugural year in 1972 and only served in Allegheny County. Today, the Southwestern Chapter now has over 193 Foster Grandparents volunteering in 137 Sites in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties.

Foster Grandparents serve a minimum of 15 hours each week. They receive a tax-free stipend to help defray the cost of serving. In addition, Foster Grandparents receive travel reimbursement, and supplemental insurance while volunteering. Grandparents are recognized throughout the year and are invited to attend an annual Recognition Luncheon for their service to the community.
